Whether it’s for cold weather, rain protection, to cool off or protect from the sun and flies – blankets often play an important part in the daily routine with our horses. There are some important factors to consider before purchasing a blanket, and given the investment, they can sometimes represent, you want to do your research to make sure it’s the right fit for your horse and his needs.
Here are our recommendations for blankets in various categories. This is what we use and love every day.
Winter Blanket: Horseware Rambo Duo Bundle
Living in a place that gets cold, wet, and long winters, good quality blankets are non-negotiable to keep the horse warm and dry. There is a lot to choose from, but if the climate where you are means you use these on your horse regularly, we highly recommend you invest in good quality here.
Stable Blanket
During the cold months, a stable blanket keeps the horse warm and snug. For this, we use the Horseware Amigo Insulator Medium Blanket. This one is made from ripstop polyester and is strong and breathable. It has a detachable collar and the same coat shine-enhancing properties as the Rambo Duo and secure fastening in the front and under the stomach.

Fly Mask
If your horse is turned out in the summer and there are many flies you may want to protect your horse by putting on a fly sheet. Personally, we don’t use them as flies aren’t that big of a problem where we are and our summers are short, but we do sometimes opt for a mask to stop them from gathering around the eyes of the horse (which she hates!) and also give her some protection from the sun. The Shires Fine Mesh Fly Mask with Nose Fringes is excellent and fits her really well. The fact that it doesn’t cover her entire face is great as the nose section of the full face versions tend to just get slimy and disgusting anyway. The fringes are excellent for chasing those annoying bugs off her nose and nostrils.
